During each academic year, there are a number of Student Nights held in Mareel where UHI Shetland students (plus some special guests) perform a variety of music they have put together during their time studying at Mareel.
"I’m Daisy Anderson and I’ve been studying HNC Music at Mareel this past year. My first student night, however, was way back in 2019. This will be my eighth Student Night and I can honestly say that each and every one of them have been brilliant fun.
Student Nights are, in a word, chaotic. Setlists and stage plans are a scarcity but with that chaos comes a unique creativity. A great part of the Student Nights is its variety - people create their own sets and play the music that they want to play. What we all share is a love of music, and while it is difficult to nail down paperwork and soundcheck times, each student is passionate about their craft.
This year we have had a real variety of genres, with the last Student Night featuring Rock, Traditional, Jazz Fusion and House Music. To showcase this variety, we have been creating a playlist which features each act’s current inspirations! Through these playlists, we hope that you will discover new music and understand a little more about each act that you see on the night.
So, what can you expect from this Student Night? Honestly, we don’t even really know what to expect... however, we are sure that you will have the time of your life."
