We're exhibiting Sharing Painting and Printmaking by Linda Newington, in Mareel's Feature Space.

Linda Newington is a painter and printmaker living in Shetland. Her work includes drawing, painting, printmaking, and artists’ books.

Her response to the Shetland landscape led to the use of mixed media. Her paintings are made using Golden Flow acrylic, oil and artists watercolour paint, loose pigment, chalk and oil pastels, glitter and mica on canvas and paper. She often works in watercolour and sketch books of various shapes and sizes which are an integral part of her practice.

She has a special interest in collagraph printmaking, combining drawing with collage on thick cardboard which serves as the printing plate. The plate is then inked up and passed through a press, it is a little like etching. She sometimes uses hand painting with watercolour to complete variable editions of the prints making each one unique.

With the support of VACMA from Shetland Arts/Creative Scotland she has most recently been developing her printmaking at Edinburgh Printmakers, both collagraphs and monotypes. She is currently investigating the Japanese printmaking technique ‘Mokuhanga’ a type of woodcutting. Also during visits to Edinburgh with the support of VACMA she has carried out research at selected art libraries in the city on artists, ideas, materials, and techniques.
