Bert Simpson was born and grew up in Shetland in the 1940s and 50s before leaving for art school and life as an artist and designer in Edinburgh. He studied furniture, ceramics and industrial design and worked for a leading firm of Edinburgh architects before turning freelance in the 1970s, mixing design projects and painting with running a successful pottery business.
He is now based in Orkney and is a full time painter, exhibiting his work widely throughout the UK. Noup and Noost is a personal and nostalgic look at Shetland – the place Bert still calls home. "When returning to Shetland I am reminded of its strong cultural influences and feel compelled to express those thoughts in my work".
