The popular Life Drawing Classes are returning to Mareel this winter, with the addition of a one-off tutored session, led by artist Heather Wilson.

Life Drawing Classes have been running successfully at Mareel for the past 18 months, with regular attendees of all abilities enjoying the chance to practice drawing a real life nude model.

“It was a really enjoyable course.” said one participant, whilst another praised the “good atmosphere” and “great poses”.

Previous life models have included Floortje Robertson, who wrote about her experience of sitting nude for the nation-wide ‘Oh Comely’ magazine.

“Although I found it daunting at first, I soon relaxed and started to enjoy the process. This was really because of the artists who came along each week - it’s a really relaxed atmosphere and, not being someone who draws, I found it really interesting to see their pictures develop.”

For winter 2015/16, a new male model has been recruited, however Shetland Arts are always keen to offer the opportunity to anyone who was interested in the challenge.

The classes have a very informal set-up, with artists encouraged to bring their own materials and the poses led by the model.

Tutored Flyer

This winter, in response to artists’ requests, Shetland Arts are holding a tutored workshop in early December, which will focus on some of the common and sometimes tricky aspects of Life Drawing.

Tutor Heather Wilson BA(Hons)/MFA explains, “Figure drawing is a learnable skill, this is an accessible class that teaches the basic principles of life drawing such as rendering form on paper, capturing gesture, understanding proportion and the structure of the human body.”

Previous classes have proved so popular that advance booking is recommended – spaces can be booked now through Shetland Box Office at Mareel and Isleburgh, over the phone on 01595 745555 or online at www.shetlandboxoffice.org
