Shetland Arts is proud to present Dr. Jayne Wallace’s first solo show at Bonhoga Gallery. Her work and research is known internationally and the exhibition is the first solo show in the UK of digital jewellery and interactive art objects.
Jayne Wallace is a digital artist with a background in contemporary jewellery. The core of her work considers how jewellery can play a role within our relationships and what we each consider emotionally meaningful, and how this can be enriched through digital technologies.
With the progression of digital culture and technologies, the person can seem to be removed from interactions and exchanges, and privacy invaded. Experiencing Jayne Wallace’s work is the opposite of this. Although many of her pieces contain digital technology, it is clear that Jayne has a deep connection with the stories and the people associated with each piece.
Jayne Wallace doesn’t just make work. She makes work with and for people, so it seemed an anomaly to ask her to exhibit at Bonhoga without any of the pieces connecting with people here in Shetland. This was the seed for her 2009 residency at the Booth in Scalloway, which provided her with the space and time to work with two Shetland fishing families, exploring distance and relationship. This work with the two families forms the heart of the exhibition and inspired its title Anchor Points.
The Anchor Points pieces represent a journey over the past three years that Jayne and the two families have been on, sometimes face to face, sometimes remotely, and have an intimacy that is born of this journey. This is the first time this work has been shown.
Work in the show also includes pieces that explore memory loss and dementia as well as pieces that are about relationships over distance and how technology can enhance communication.
Portage: Anchor Points opens at Bonhoga Gallery, Weisdale Mill on Friday 9 March from 5.30pm-7.30pm. Everyone welcome. The exhibition continues until Sunday 22 April and is appropriate for all ages. This exhibition is supported by Shetland Arts and Northumbria University.
