The first exhibition in the main gallery at Bonhoga for 2019 is an exhibition of photographs from Islesburgh Photographic Club.

This is a mixed show of work from current members, focussing largely on Shetland and its landscape and environment but not exclusively. Shetland Arts will also launch a ‘Shetland Collection’ of greeting cards featuring images from all the exhibition participants, Sidney Tulloch, Austin Taylor, David Sinclair, Graham Wishart, Joanne Harding, Jean Sinclair, Martin Smith, Peter Parker, Stuart Hubbard, Sophie Whitehead, Terry Atkinson and Teresa Williamson.

Islesburgh Photographic Club formed in 1950 amalgamating two existing clubs. Having access to darkrooms in its location at Islesburgh Community Centre allowed developing and printing in black and white as well as colour processing. Over the years the facilities have improved and expanded, mostly due to the hard work and innovation of the members, however, more recently have lost access to a darkroom. The Club has seen many changes over the years and overcome certain challenges, not least the introduction of the digital camera. However, as improvements to the standard and quality of digital cameras, computer software and printers are made, the quality of images, which was so high with conventional film, is no longer compromised.

The group regularly participates in competitions and projects with other camera clubs, showing their work from Orkney to New Zealand. The ‘Highland Challenge’ is an annual event in which the club has competed very successfully over the last few years.

All of the group’s members reside in Shetland, and vary from young and old, and novice to semi-professional photographers. The club continues to thrive and meet regularly from October through to May, and are always looking to welcome new members.

Angela Smith of Shetland Arts said ‘the exhibition will have wide appeal with the diversity of subject matter to view, ranging from dramatic land and seascapes of Shetland, to stunning scenery of Turkey, Italy and USA’,

Everyone is welcome to the public opening on Saturday 26th January at 10.30pm before the exhibition opens officially at 11.00am, and will run until 17th March.
