A celebration of island culture, Europa is a new play and exhibition by Salvatore Cabras and Maggie Rosea, presented by Glasgow-based theatre group Replico Productions, will be touring Scotland in August and September and visiting Shetland for two performances presented by Shetland Arts, one in the Garrison Theatre on Friday 30 August and one in the Walls Hall on Saturday 31 August.
Europa, a beautiful Phoenician princess, is abducted by Zeus, disguised as a bull, who takes her on a perilous journey over the Mediterranean to Crete. Linking Mediterranean and Celtic folkmore; and tracing the imagery of Europa and the Bull from classical frescoes and mosaics, to painters like Titian and Picasso or even the branding of fast cars and energy drinks; this poetic retelling of the ancient myth reveals how the frequent tensions between European sophistication and Western vitality engender a European identity.
Far from the traditional mainland perception of remote isolation, islands have in many cases driven the advancement of civilisation from as far afield as the Aegean or the Hebrides. This international collaboration will celebrate diverse cultural links, such as the powerful image of the bull, and the shared experiences of islands communities.Shetland Arts’ Drama Development Officer, John Haswell, said: “It’s always great to have touring theatre visiting Shetland, particularly a play like Europa which explores the importance of island life.”
The ancient story of Europa encapsulates a refreshingly modern European perspective which will be reflected in all elements of the project. Audiences will be invited to take part in an informal post-show discussion. The show will be supported by workshops either in a community setting or for schools to support the Curriculum for Excellence.
The creative process and research materials will be documented and made available as an online resource.
Both performances are doors at 7pm, start 7.30pm and the play is suitable for ages 12+. Tickets cost £8 (£5 concessions) and are available via Shetland Box Office in Mareel & Islesburgh, over the phone on 01595 745 555, and online at www.shetlandboxoffice.org.
