We’ve been incredibly lucky to have Hannah with us this week, gaining hands-on experience with our Marketing Team. At the start of the week, we invited her to write a blog post reflecting on her time with us here at Shetland Arts. We’re excited to share what she’s been up to and how she has gotten on.

Monday

When I first arrived in Mareel for my work experience, I was welcomed by Kerry, who gave me a brief tour of the building and all the offices where the staff are based. I then got set up at the desk alongside Tessa, Tara, and Adam, who all introduced me to their roles in the marketing department. In the morning, I attended their marketing meeting and listened to the discussions the team had. My main task for the day was to start the competitor analysis research. The task was to find other venues like Mareel and compare them to see how the marketing team could improve their social media strategy.

In the afternoon, we went to the Garrison Theatre to put up posters to advertise upcoming Shetland Arts events for the public to see. I enjoyed that because it was years since I'd last visited the Garrison. Adam showed me the cinema’s projectors, which was exciting because I always wondered what they looked like.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, I enjoyed learning how to use Mailchimp to write the “What’s On” film email for next Friday as well as writing the social media posts for upcoming films that are screening throughout November. I also learned what a rebranding proposal is and how the team make their decision on the best companies to work with for the rebranding.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, I went to the Ops meeting, where the staff discussed the operations in the building and if it’s all going to plan. Kathryn then introduced me to her role as project manager, and it was fun to see what they’d been working on, especially the Covid Memorial project, which I think is a great idea. Later I recorded the Shetland Arts SIBC advert and worked on this blog post.

Thursday

On Thursday, I helped Adam put up posters around the building for a music event, and I learned about the posters and where they store them. Next, we had the cinema meeting where Tara, Tessa and Adam talked about the film sales and what they should screen next depending on the sales and what the public enjoys the most. In the afternoon, I looked through the film schedule for December and proofed the information as well as finishing my task for the week.

Friday

On Friday, I made and uploaded the November film socials for Facebook and Instagram. I then gave my competitor analysis research to Tessa and Tara and explained the information I had for them about the competitors. I didn’t have a lot of new marketing ideas for them though as their social media strategy is already very good!

Overall, I have really enjoyed working here at Mareel and doing the tasks with the Marketing team, it has been a great experience for me. I’m very grateful for Tessa, Tara, Adam, Kathryn, Kerry and everyone else involved who supported me and gave me the opportunity to experience working here. Thank you!
