With the April film schedule just getting underway, Shetland Arts’ Cinema Programmer, Jenny Leask, shares her thoughts on what’s coming up this month.

Jenny has been working with Shetland Arts as cinema programmer for six years, having previously worked at cinemas in Edinburgh and for the Edinburgh International Film Festival since the mid-1990s. She enjoys the challenge of putting together the cinema programme every month, making sure to include a wide variety of blockbusters, family films and smaller, independent films, trying to ensure everyone can find something for them.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

“Families and children can look forward to seeing a hugely popular video game make the leap onto our cinema screens in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, as Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother, Luigi, trying to save a captured princess and prevent the powerful Bowser from conquering the world. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is back by popular demand so there is another chance to catch the latest adventure of everyone’s favourite leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying feline!

John Wick: Chapter 4

Bringing action and adventure to our screens, we have the legendary role-playing game adaptation Dungeons & Dragons: Honour of Thieves, which follows a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertaking an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic – but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people… Keanu Reeves returns to his iconic role as John Wick in the thrilling fourth instalment of the franchise, John Wick: Chapter 4, with Wick taking his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld.

Renfield

We have comedies for every taste this month, from charming London-set romcom Rye Lane to Nicolas Cage hamming it up as Count Dracula in comedy horror Renfield, via Allelujah, a warmly comic and deeply moving drama with a cast that includes Jennifer Saunders, David Bradley, Russell Tovey and Judi Dench, and 80 For Brady, a feelgood comedy based on a true story starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno - four best friends who are determined to live life to the fullest embark on a wild trip to the 2017 Super Bowl to see their hero Tom Brady. And Ben Affleck directs and stars alongside Matt Damon in comedy drama Air, that tells the incredible true story of the game-changing partnership between a then-rookie Michael Jordan and Nike's fledgling basketball division.

God's Creatures

There are moving dramas in the shape of A Good Person, starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman, and God’s Creatures, set in an Irish fishing village and starring Emily Watson and Paul Mescal. There are thrillers from Spain (The Beasts) and France (The Night of the 12th) and a poignant documentary from Sweden – Electric Malady invites audiences into the isolated world of William, a young man whose reaction to the radioactive by-product of our interconnected digital age has led him to a remote cabin in the wilderness where he's cut himself off from most forms of technology. And there are two terrific music films – a newly restored re-release of exhilarating ska concert movie Dance Craze, and a darkly hilarious look at fifty years of prog rock band King Crimson, with In the Court of the Crimson King.

The Big Lebowski

Finally, the Dude is back on the big screen in a 25th anniversary rerelease of the iconic Coen brothers’ comedy The Big Lebowski, starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore and Steve Buscemi.
