Youth Arts at Shetland Arts

At Shetland Arts, we offer a range of creative opportunities for children and young people, helping them explore new artforms, build confidence and connect with others in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Weekly Youth Arts Groups

Film Crew

Our Film Crew meets weekly during term time and introduces children and young people to the practical skills of filmmaking. Led by filmmaker Barnum Smith, sessions focus on creativity, collaboration and fun, with participants working together to develop and create short films using professional equipment at Mareel.

Shetland Youth Theatre

Shetland Youth Theatre (ages 12–19) meets weekly during term time and works towards intensive productions throughout the year. Led by director Stephenie Georgia, the group develops acting and performance skills while encouraging creative input from participants. This welcoming and inclusive group has enjoyed local and national success and follows the SQA framework, supporting transferable skills for further study or creative careers.

New members are always welcome. If you’d like to know more about joining Shetland Youth Theatre or Film Crew and want to find out when the next block starts, please contact [email protected].

Workshops

Alongside our weekly groups, we run creative workshops throughout the year, giving young people the chance to try something new or develop existing interests. Recent workshops have included:

  • Decorative sewing for 9–11 year olds
  • Discovery Film Festival shorts and activities
  • Traditional music intensives
  • Dance and theatre workshops

From film and theatre to music, dance and visual arts, our youth arts programme supports young people to be creative, curious and confident.
