The Phantom Of The Opera (1925): Classic film screening with a live music performance
We're celebrating Halloween season with a screening of one of the earliest horror masterpieces.
We’re celebrating Halloween season with a screening of one of the earliest horror masterpieces, 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera, with a live performed score on Wednesday 28 October (7:30pm).
Directed by Rupert Julian and starring Lon Chaney, the first film adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel ranks among the greatest horror films of the silent era. Filled with opulent costumes, extravagant sets and hundreds of extras, the film made dazzling early use of Technicolour.
For this very special screening and performance, Scottish composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman have created a new haunting and dramatic score befitting of this silent era classic. Having released their first collaborative album, ‘Ash Grey And The Gull Glides On’, in 2024 to critical acclaim and a Scottish Album Of The Year Award nomination, the pair come together once more celebrating an iconic piece of cinema history through their new accompanying soundtrack album, ‘House With A Curse’.
Expect a score with a present-day approach, navigating opera, neo-classical, acoustic and electronic instruments with elements of sound design. Not to be missed!
In the afternoon before the performance (1pm – 2pm), Andrew and Tommy will also be hosting a free In Conversation event. They’ll talk openly about their journeys in music, their approaches to composition (both independently and together) and the experience of writing a feature-length score for a classic silent film in just three months.
2025 Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre (DCA) commissioned musician, artist and designer Tommy Perman and Andrew Wasylyk (AKA Andrew Mitchell bassist Idlewild), composer and producer from Dundee, wrote a score for the 100th anniversary of Rupert Julian’s 1925 original The Phantom of the Opera. They then toured in 2025 at DCA, Edinburgh Picturehouse, Glasgow Film Theatre, Hippodrome Bo’ness and Eden Court Inverness.
