Shetland Tool Library and Paint Recycling Scheme to transfer to COPE Ltd

The Shetland Tool Library and Paint Recycling Scheme will be moving from Mareel to COPE Ltd creating a new chapter for these valued community assets. The scheme will launch from Shetland Home Co on 3rd August 2026.

COPE Ltd is a well established and successful social enterprise and charity which provides employment and skill development for adults with learning disabilities or autism – and Shetland’s leading centre for community reuse and recycling. They will take over the running of both schemes and will launch from Shetland Home Co, Gremista, Lerwick on 3rd August 2026.

‘“We are delighted to be building on the great work from Shetland Arts to get the Tool Library and Community RePaint service established in Shetland.  We believe it is a natural fit with our Shetland Home Co. operation and the promotion of reuse and waste minimisation.  We look forward to supporting the community with their DIY projects going forward.” – Steven Coutts, Chief Executive Officer, COPE Ltd.

As part of the transition, loans are currently on hold while the transfer of inventory, website and membership database is completed. The pause will ensure that the service can reopen smoothly under COPE’s management. Existing Tool Library members will be contacted directly about the transfer.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has supported and made use of the Tool Library and Paint Recycling Scheme over the past few years. We are delighted to pass this on to develop further, helping more people share resources, recycle materials and access tools they may not otherwise have had.” – Graeme Howell, Chief Executive, Shetland Arts.
