Brian Goddard: One in a Thousand

One in a Thousand by Brian Goddard (funded by Shetland Arts) is a particular celebration of Burra and Trondra through bringing to life people's contemporary passions, interests and pre-occupations.

One of our successful applicants of the Shetland Arts Commissioning Fund, Brian Goddard, tells us more about his project.

One in a Thousand by Brian Goddard (funded by Shetland Arts) is a particular celebration of Burra and Trondra through bringing to life people’s contemporary passions, interests and pre-occupations. It uses the still image, put to people’s very characterful voices, and all stitched together into a film to view at the Mareel cinema – look out for tickets in late November!

In “One in a Thousand”, Brian explores the slower nature of the still image in this era of heavily-cut, fast-paced video. Stills-with-sound invite the viewer’s imagination and active investment more than video – so that we are not spoon-fed a narrative. As our eyes scan the image, taking time, we all interpret the show in different, very personal ways. The still scaffolds the audio, which itself carries the emotive force.

“One in a Thousand”, in essence, is about diversity. It is about what makes us individual and thereby able to recognise our commonalities. It is about the creation of meaning and identity. We may have very different hobbies or passions, but the shattering degree to which we pursue them, the intense fulfillment which we derive from them, the smile on our lips when we recognise vicarious pleasure at seeing someone lost to their interest? Who doesn’t know this?

Many thanks to Shetland Arts for making this film possible.” – Brian Goddard
