Do you want to have your homemade film on the big screen?

A popular component of the former film festival Screenplay and celebrating its 18th year - Homemade has become a staple to many Shetlanders wanting to showcase their filmmaking prowess. We’d love to have your short films, up to 4mins, be part of our screenings in September. Whether you're into storytelling, comedy, documentaries, or animation - we want your creations. Spring has sprung so get your cameras out and start filming!

Selected short films will be shown on the big screen on Friday 6th September and Sunday 8th September. An audience vote will decide the winner, plus Shetland ForWirds is sponsoring a prize for the film that demonstrates the most effective use of Shetland dialect.

The Homemade team is made up of familiar faces from Screenplay - Kathy Hubbard, Logan Nicolson and Cara McDiarmid will be at the forefront of the event.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 7 August at midnight, and don't forget to mark your calendars for the Homemade screenings on the 6th & 8th of September.

Submission Requirements

If you would like to submit a short film for this year’s Homemade event:

  • You must be a Shetlander, by birth, residency or in higher education - in other words, you must come from Shetland, OR currently reside in Shetland, OR be a Shetland resident currently studying away.
  • You can submit more than one film, but no individual film must be longer than four minutes - including end credits. Please consider the 4 minutes as a limit, not as a target! Very often, shorter is so much better. There is a selection process and your film(s) might not be included in the final programme, but we try to include as many as we can.
  • Films should be suitable for general viewing - The event draws a mixed audience, including children, and we will not accept anything offensive or upsetting. We anticipate recommending the BBFC 12A classification for the Homemade screenings. This means that audience members under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Here is a link to the BBFC website that explains the criteria when we consider the content of your film. www.bbfc.co.uk/rating/12

If in doubt, contact the Homemade team on [email protected].
