10 & 11 November 2012
Words and Pictures is a weekend of creative fun for children at Bonhoga Gallery over 10th and 11th November. Designed for seven to fourteen year olds two separate workshops will focus on different ways of creating stories, using words on the Saturday and pictures on the Sunday. The first of the two workshops is on a spooky theme. Led by teacher Ria Moncrieff, the evening of story-telling and creative writing will involve ghostly legends from the murky history of the Weisdale Mill and the chance to write some totally new ghost stories, that will then be published by Shetland Arts in time for Christmas.
Returning to Shetland after her appearance at Wordplay in 2011, artist and writer Sally Kindberg will be joining Ria to illustrate the stories as they are created on the night. She will then lead a separate workshop at Bonhoga on Sunday morning, designed around her and Smirk’s Cartoon Correspondence exhibition that will be on show in the Lower Gallery (café).
Sally’s workshop will use the idea of a traditional ‘round robin’ Christmas letter as the starting point for some cartoon creations that will bring each child’s 2012 highlights to life and provide something creative to send out with the Christmas post this year.
Both workshops promise to be creative, challenging and most of all fun. Angela Smith, Duty Manager at Bonhoga said, “I can’t wait to see and hear what the bairns come up with over the weekend, Bonhoga is a perfect venue on a dark night… just about anything could happen…and Sally’s cartoon workshop will be a absolute blast!”.Places are limited to 15 children for each workshop, at a cost of £10 for the Saturday workshop (to include hot chocolate and snacks), £7 for the Sunday workshop or £15 for both. Bookings can be made through the Shetland Box Office (www.shetlandboxoffice.org).
