Shetland Arts has announced the line-up for Fiery Sessions, its annual traditional music concerts on Up Helly Aa day. The two concerts will star Eunice Henderson & The South Mainland Young Fiddlers, Eart Kyent, Bryan Gear & Violet Tulloch, and the Loris MacDonald Band.

Eunice Henderson & The South Mainland Fiddlers are back for a second year to entertain the audiences at Fiery Sessions with their toe-tapping

traditional tunes. Accompanied by Eunice on the piano, the members of the group range in age from 8-15 and include past winners of the Young Fiddler of the Year. All from the South Mainland and taught by Eunice, they deliver a mix of group and solo performances that demonstrate the breadth of talent and skill in Shetland’s young musicians.

Eart Kyent are brothers Tom, Colin and John Robert Deyell with their cousin John Philip Johnson, who have played banjo, fiddles, mandolin and guitar together for around 20 years. They were formed in the mid 1980’s and have played at festivals in Shetland, Orkney, the UK and Faroe, as well as festivals further afield, such as the Inter Celtic festival at Lorient. They play a mixture of good-going Irish, Shetland and Cape Breton music.

Bryan Gear is one of the finest fiddlers in Shetland today. A student of the late great Willie Hunter, Bryan is now widely recognised as Willie's worthy successor in the field of Shetland traditional fiddle music. Violet Tulloch, a high profile member of the Shetland traditional music scene, regularly accompanies Bryan. Violet is internationally acclaimed for her unique 'vamping' piano style and has regularly accompanied many of the Shetland greats.

The Loris MacDonald Band stars young multi-instrumentalist Loris MacDonald who has been playing music since she was 12 and says it’s “in her blood.” From Shetland fiddle to Scottish accordion to classical piano, Loris delivers something for everybody and is backed ably by her band.

Tickets cost £12 / £10 and are available to book via Shetland Box Office in Mareel & Islesburgh, over the phone on 01595 745 555, or online here. Early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
