As part of Power of Place Shetland Architectural Society are holding an open-doors event, called Doors Open, where they will be opening their homes and homes of clients to members of the public.   When would be better than in Shetland’s Year of Architecture 2010 for the local profession to give the public an opportunity to view and experience well considered, innovative and at times very personal design? The homes include town and rural locations, new build, refurbishments and extensions.

The event has been organised to coincide with Shetland’s Hamefarin (14 – 26 June 2010) and the individual homes will be open on certain dates during Hamefarin fortnight. The event is separate to the already well established national Doors Open Day which takes place annually in September. Doors Open includes two architectural projects which have been shortlisted in the northern isles section of the Inverness Architectural Association (IAA) Design Awards 2010.

The Doors Open homes are: Bernard & June Redman’s house at Ham Station, Ham, Bressay, designed by Bernard, a new house at Vedrik in Bigton designed by architect Ian Irvine, Iain & Suzanne Malcolmson of Redman and Sutherland Architects own house, Grunnabreck, at South Nesting, a new home at 9 Quoys Road, Upper Sound, Lerwick designed by PJP Architects, Foraness at Inner Sand, Sand, Bixter by Redman and Sutherland Architects, Ian Irvine, of PJP Architects, extension to his family home Sjoglimt in Burra, Skeogarth, one of two houses designed by Mike Finnie on a south west facing coastal site in East Burra and Ballaskerry, Upper Quoys, Upper Sound, Lerwick by Redman and Sutherland Architects.

The projects short-listed for the Inverness Architectural Association (IAA) Design Awards 2010 are Ballaskerry, Upper Sound, Lerwick and Iain & Suzanne Malcolmson’s house at Grunnabreck, South Nesting.

A full description of all the houses that are open to visitors can be found on www.powerofplace.co.uk <http://www.powerofplace.co.uk/> . All the houses have individual opening times during the Hamefarin fortnight. The exact dates, opening times and directions can be found on the Power of Place website. If you don’t have access to the internet you can find out details by phoning Shetland Arts on 01595 743843.  A leaflet is also available from Shetland Arts at the Toll Clock Centre in Lerwick.   ‘Power of Place – Shetland’s Year of Architecture and Place 2010’. It is the first project of its kind in Shetland. The project hopes to bring greater community involvement with architecture and more participation in decision making about public buildings and spaces in Shetland. It is a partnership between Shetland Arts, Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Architectural Society, the Scottish Government’s programme of architecture and outreach activities (through Architecture + Design Scotland) and Shetland community organisations.   During 2010 Power of Place is running arts, educational and community workshops for all ages, themed articles in Shetland Life, an international  conference (Building Resilience in Island Communities 17/18th September), open forums for debate and discussion, youth street events and 'Bricks in Flicks' - an architecture film festival.
