ARTIST ROOMS On Tour

Shetland Museum & Archives and Shetland Arts Development Agency will show work by internationally acclaimed photojournalist Don McCullin in Da Gadderie and Bonhoga Gallery from 29 November 2014 to 22 February 2015 in a joint exhibition entitled Fallen.

This will be the first time these powerful images will be shown as part of ARTIST ROOMS, an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art acquired for the nation by Tate and The National Galleries of Scotland through the generosity of Anthony d'Offay with additional support from funders, including the Art Fund.

The ARTIST ROOMS tour programme, now in its sixth year, is showing at 18 museums and galleries across the UK in 2014. The tour is made possible thanks to the support of Arts Council England, the Art Fund, and in Scotland, Creative Scotland.

McCullin worked for over 20 years documenting conflict and social deprivation throughout the world including; Vietnam, Cyprus, Northern Ireland and Beirut. For McCullin, the work wasn’t simply about the photographs, but about humanity.

Shetland Museum & Archives and Shetland Arts are planning to run a youth ambassador programme in the run up to, and during, the exhibition, to help shape it. Local young people will be encouraged to engage with the questions and issues raised by these images to develop new projects inspired by the photographs.

John Hunter, Exhibitions Officer at Shetland Museum & Archives, said: “This is a hard hitting exhibition with no compromises. McCullin’s work highlights stark realities of economic collapse; of war and its consequences. This will be a poignant exhibition which will coincide with WWI commemorations. To be accepted as one of the venues for an ARTIST ROOMS exhibition is a major coup for Shetland Museum & Archives and reaffirms its ethos of bringing high status international shows to Shetland.’

Jane Matthews, Exhibitions Officer at Shetland Arts, said: “Shetland Arts is proud to be working with ARTIST ROOMS and Shetland Museum & Archives to deliver this internationally significant exhibition in Bonhoga Gallery and Da Gadderie. It is rare for work of this calibre, with such social and historical value, to be shown in Shetland, and we expect there will be a lot of interest in, and engagement with, the exhibition.”
