Shetland Arts is thrilled to announce an amazing line-up of dance performances and interactive workshops to captivate audiences at Mareel this September. These diverse performances and workshops promise to engage and inspire attendees. BURNT OUT youth and adult workshops are being held on the 14th and 15th of September, with the performance on Saturday 16th September. Totentanz performances are on Thursday 21st – Saturday 23rd September.

BURNT OUT is an urgent and timely dance-theatre work encapsulating one Australian's experience of the devastating bushfires and the personal experience of the daughter of an environmental geochemist. Originally from Australia (Ngunnawal Country), Penny Chivas is a Glasgow-based dance artist with a background in improvisation and multidisciplinary practices. BURNT OUT takes us on a journey and ask the question ‘why do we feel we are unable to acknowledge the changes around us even when surrounded by thick smoke?’

The youth (16 – 19 years) and adult workshops, draw on the natural environment both indoors and outdoors and encourage participants to work together in gentle movement and in reflective practices. There is no requirement to have attended any movement practices in the past, just a willingness to chat, stretch, listen and respond.

Totentanz is an entertaining show and community photographic project that approaches death with dark humour and an open heart. Two performers in a dancehall setting try to create the perfect dance of death - and fail each time. Over the course of the show, they try out different shapes, different styles, different (sometimes glittering) costumes - trying and failing, laughing, kicking, and screaming, all in an effort to make the perfect Totentanz. A photography exhibition including images taken at a previous Shetland workshop will also be travelling with the Scottish tour of the show.
