Sunday (30July) sees the opening concert of Fiddle Frenzy 2017 at Mareel - meet the Curator, listen to leading local fiddlers and dance the night away! Featuring Haltadans, the High Level Orchestra, Kirsten Hendry and Andy Kain and the Ceilidh Puckles. On Monday Fiddle Frenzy visits the ever popular Shetland Showcase at Isleburgh. A very popular summer series of Monday evening events run by Islesburgh Community Centre, Shetland Showcase celebrates Shetland tradition music and includes displays of local arts and crafts. Listen to Eunice Henderson’s students, followed by talented young Shetland band Mirka. Both nights will be followed by a session in Mareel from 10pm.
On Tuesday Fiddle Frenzy travels North with a lively evening in Ollaberry Hall featuring the renowned fiddle and guitar duo Ross Couper and Tom Oakes, the Northmavine Fiddle and Accordion Club and a performance of the traditional Papa Stour Sword Dance! This will be followed by a session in the hall. Wednesday sees a return to Mareel . Join RANT, Kansa and the Shetland’s Heritage Fiddlers for an evening of vibrant sound with some of Scotland’s finest fiddle players! This will be followed by sessions at Mareel and The Lounge from 10pm. Thursday night features another great line-up with Barry Nisbet and Friends, Andrew Gifford and Grant Nicol and then the Shetland Young Fiddlers of the Year George Spence and Anya Johnson, then the rich sound of Scottish fiddle band Salt House. Round off the evening with a session in Mareel from 10pm.
On Friday night we go across to Bressay Hall for a night of dancing with Danse McCabre as well as performances from Yell band Rack n Ruin, Martha & Ewan Thomson and other talented local fiddlers. The closing concert on Saturday night at Mareel will feature Jenna Reid & Kevin MacKenzie, Hjaltibonhoga, Peter Gear and Ewen Thomson as well as performances from the Fiddle Frenzy students. Sunday (6 August) will round off Fiddle Frenzy 2017 with a lively afternoon of Shetland Reels in Mareel Café Bar and a farewell session from 1-2pm.
